“A postcard came in the mail. An ad was in the NAEA newsletter. I received e-mail about it. At that point The Teacher Institute through The National Gallery of Art got my attention. It wouldn’t hurt to apply, I thought. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I thought. And besides I would already be in DC for a family vacation.
When I heard I was accepted I couldn’t wait to share the news. What a wonderful opportunity for professional development. As an elementary art teacher I love to bring back the knowledge I gain from my travels. And who could resist learning about all the beautiful art that the French Impressionists made?
There were 26 of us that included art, French, language arts and history teachers. We came from all over the country to participate in this program. It was six days packed with lectures, museum activities, gallery tours, demonstrations, and reflections. It was simply amazing!
Having never paid attention, in college, during art history, it was fascinating to connect the dots between the artists and the art they created. And to be able to do this surrounded by the actual art and the curators who generously shared their knowledge, was incredible.
In addition to all that I learned, I received a collection of teacher resources, which included books, posters, DVDs and CD’s that I can’t wait to use with my students. It will be incredible to share with my students what I learned about French art and culture and the changes that took place in art due to the impressionists.
The educators who ran the program taught us ways to look at art and also, shared with us the many online resources that are available to teachers.
There were two Teacher Institutes this summer at The National Gallery of Art. The focus changes each summer, but no matter what they decide to focus on, it was a worthwhile adventure for me. And hopefully something I will get to do again.”
