Summer is in full swing! We hope you are enjoying the heat and spending time in the water, whether at home in the kiddie pool or with your toes in the sand at the ocean! Either way, these magical mermaid necklaces are a fun way to display your beach found or store bought seashells.
This time of year is hot (not complaining because in a short few months, the snow will be flying), but some indoor activities are necessary when you just can’t spend the entire day outside. This was a perfect craft for my 3 year old while the littlest was napping. It’s rare to get that one-on-one time with her, so it’s great to sit down to an activity and focus on her.
Not only are these mermaid necklaces super cute, but they also make a great preschool activity! They are an excellent way to practice those fine motor skills through clay forming, painting, measuring, cutting, beading and knotting. Also, the perfect time to unwind and catch up at a time when sports and cookouts seem to take over the calendar.
This is also a great craft for mom to create a cute statement necklace. I simply rolled my clay in silver glitter before forming and adding the shell. Once dry, I added a large jump ring and long silver chain. Perfect summer flare for patio parties!
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Roll a quarter size ball of clay.
2. Flatten to 1/4″ – 1/2″ thickness.
3. Poke hole at top using straw.
4. Paint over wet clay.
5. Add glitter!
6. Place & push shell in to center of clay circle. Let dry.
7. Cut a 24″ length of string.
8. Add shell pendant to string.
9. Add beads.
10. Knot ends.
You and your preschooler will be so excited to show off your Mermazing necklaces.
Hold on to your shellphone 😜, you can add to your craft treasure with the Mermaid Jewelry and Mermaid Tail Jewelry Maker kits. Perfect for big and little mermaids!
