Earth Day Recycled Bird Feeder Craft for Kids

Spring is in the air and if you’re anything like me, you’re trying to get excited about spring cleaning (yay). While you’re pitching and purging, save a few empty milk cartons and don’t toss those take-out forks just yet! Grab a few twigs from the front yard and let’s celebrate Earth Day by crafting up these cute recycled bird feeders.

They say “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and if that’s true, these recycled bird feeders are quite a prize 😉

Earth Day Crafting with Kids

These bird feeders will not last very long outside in the elements… But it is a cute rainy day activity that teaches basic painting skills and that anything can be used for art, if you use your imagination. Also, it reinforces the importance of recycling and reusing. If taught at a young age, it is something they will likely continue as an adult.

*Please note that this project requires adult assistance, as it involves sharp tools and hot glue.*

How to Craft an Earth Day Recycled Bird Feeder with Kids

Here is what you’ll need:

• Empty milk or juice carton
• Plastic fork
• Twigs
• Tempera paint
• Utility knife or scissors
• Paint brush
• Twine
• Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Earth Day Recycled Bird Feeder Instructions:

1. Cut rectangle hole on one side of milk carton using utility knife or super sharp scissors.

2. Paint solid color base coat. Let dry. Apply additional coats, if necessary.

3. Paint details using a fork or as desired. Let dry.

4. Trim or break a twig to 5″ and 3″ pieces.

5. Glue 5″ twig to top of milk carton. Refer to photo for placement.

5. Glue 3″ twig to bottom of rectangle hole. Refer to photo for placement.

6. Cut a piece of twine and tie at each twig end to create a hanger. Trim Excess.

Hang, fill, enjoy!
